Who Are We?

Alwatania Energy and Engineering Company (AEECO) is a leading Sudanese private company focused on the development, engineering, and operation of energy and infrastructure projects. Established in 2022 as an SPV by its parent company Sudan natural gas company (Sunagas) a subsidiary of Energy and Mining Group (EMG).

AEECO was founded with the vision of contributing to Sudan’s energy security and economic growth by leveraging private sector expertise and capital in the power and construction sectors. The company’s mission is to develop reliable and efficient power generation assets that meet international standards, while building local capacity and promoting sustainable development. AEECO operates as part of the EMG, a diversified energy holding company in Sudan, and serves as Sunagas’s flagship power project development arm

AEECO’s core competencies span the entire project lifecycle: project identification, feasibility studies, financing, engineering design, procurement, construction management, and operations & maintenance. The company is managed by a team of seasoned professionals with extensive experience in thermal power generation, renewable energy, and large-scale construction projects in Sudan and the Middle East. The management structure includes a Board of Directors that provides strategic direction and an executive team responsible for day-to-day operations (project development, technical, financial, legal, and E&S departments). AEECO prides itself on combining international best practices with deep local knowledge – functioning as a bridge between global technology partners and the local market needs.

Track Record and Portfolio

Klanayeeb 304 MW Thermal Power Plant (Eastern Sudan)

AEECO has signed an agreement to develop the Klanayeeb power plant, which will add 304MW of generation capacity to the Eastern Sudan region. This project, considered a cornerstone for the regional grid, will stabilize electricity supply in Port Sudan and surrounding states. AEECO led the feasibility study and obtained government approvals for Klanayeeb, and is currently arranging financing for project execution. This demonstrates the company’s ability to initiate and structure large-scale power initiatives.

Solar and Wind Projects

In line with global shifts towards renewables, AEECO has active proposals for utility-scale solar PV farms (50–100 MW) and wind farms in Northern Sudan. It has already under execution several small pilot projects (e.g., a 20 MW solar project in north stat) to gain experience in renewable technologies, and is prepared to scale up these solutions. By diversifying into renewables, AEECO supports Sudan’s goal of tapping its vast solar and wind potential.

Thermal Power Plant Engineering and Upgrades

The company has provided engineering consulting and EPC services for improvements at existing thermal plants. Notably, AEECO was involved in efficiency upgrades at the Garri power complex prior to Garri 3, and in maintenance programs for diesel generators in remote towns. These projects, though smaller, helped build AEECO’s on-ground execution experience and credibility with the national utility.

Construction and Infrastructure Projects

In addition to energy, AEECO has a construction division that has delivered high-voltage transformers, substations, and industrial facilities. This complements its power generation projects by enabling end-to-end solutions (power plant to plug).

In addition to energy, AEECO has a construction division that has delivered high-voltage transformers, substations, and industrial facilities. This complements its power generation projects by enabling end-to-end solutions (power plant to plug). Its integrated approach ensures faster deployment and streamlined coordination across engineering, procurement, and construction phases.

Through these projects, AEECO has forged partnerships with international technology firms (such as Siemens, General Electric, and Harbin Electric) and EPC contractors. For example, the collaboration with Siemens on Garri 3’s gas turbines and long-term service, and with SEMI (a Turkish engineering firm) on EPC, reflects AEECO’s strategy of teaming up with world-class partners while driving local execution. The company also maintains strong relationships with Sudanese authorities, including the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, Sudanese Thermal Power Generating Company (STPG), Sudan’s Electricity Regulatory Authority, and the Ministry of Finance – relationships that are crucial for navigating regulatory processes and securing support for its projects.

AEECO’s Role in the Garri 3 Project

AEECO is the primary developer and sponsor of the Garri 3 open and combined Cycle Power Plant project, under a public-private partnership framework with the Government of Sudan. Initially, the Garri 3 facility (open-cycle phase) was developed by the state-owned STPG. Recognizing the need for efficiency improvements and private capital injection, the government engaged AEECO to lead the financing and completion and conversion to combined cycle and to operate the plant under an IPPA model. In this capacity, AEECO’s responsibilities include structuring the project financing, negotiating the PPA and other project agreements, managing the EPC contractor (on behalf of the project owner), and eventually co-owning and operating the plant alongside the public sector. AEECO’s involvement has been instrumental in bringing international expertise (like Siemens and SEMI) and financing confidence to the project. The company’s local presence and engineering team provide on-the-ground oversight and facilitation, ensuring that construction progresses smoothly despite Sudan’s challenging operating environment.
